Vintage Claws

Jean Harlow - by George Hurrell 1933

Jean Harlow (above)

You may have noticed the vintage manicure (bared half- moons, claw shaped tips) made a come back in the past few seasons on the runway. More than ever nails have certainly become a fashion statement, thanks to the blogging world, Tumblr, Instagram full of nail art inspiration. It’s now easy  for all to access on the high street. Brands selling nail art kits containing multi coloured varnish, matt or cracked finishes, extreme shades, glitter, nail art stickers and glue on jewels.

The Vintage manicure, however is so much more untimely and  sophisticated. For me, once I fell in love with the vintage/glamour era’s a few years ago, and the world took notice of the Burlesque and Pin-up revival. The likes of Dita Von Teese introduced me to the perfect red vintage manicure. Her book ‘Burlesque’ gives a wonderful description of vintage nails from the 1920’s era to the 1950’s. The key to a vintage nail is the bare half-moons (see images). The 1930’s shown in the photographs of Carole Lombard and Jean Harlow, the Deco eras had a distinctive shaped nail, tapering off to a sharp point with both tips and moons bare. Colours mainly where more muted in colours such as silvers, corals, rose pinks and deep burgundy.

The 1940’s style as ritually worn by Dita Von Teese, where always long, tapered  and oval-shaped manicured with bared moons, either the moons are painted white or left bare. The polish can be any colour red, however authentically and preferably should be a TRUE RED.  Dita sees a manuicurist and probably has full manicures or gels. Just take an image to your nail bar, if you want the full works. If your good with nails and have the nail length it can be done at home. Betty Bee’s blog shows an easy DIY example on her blog

Dita von Teese also launched her own line of ready to wear nails by Kiss can be purchased from her site www.dita.nettumblr_l7hc06bU0s1qa3c4go1_500

Lime Crime: Velvetine Lips and other delights

Lime Crime was conceptualized by a girl called Miss Deere in 2008 in NY USA. She discovered that she couldnt purchase colours bright and bold enough to live up to her unique image and her “colourful imagination” says,

” Year: 2089. A girl gets her very first rocket – shiny, orange, and oh-so-beautiful. She takes her friend on a wild ride through outer space, where they blaze towards the stars giddy with glee. Such is the visualization behind My Beautiful Rocket, a lipstick color from Lime Crime’s upcoming Candyfuture collection. This is not the first and not the last bombastic concept that human-unicorn Lime Crime founder Doe Deere has introduced – in fact, she is so frenzied by her line, she comes up with a story for nearly every color she invents”

I adore Lime Crime cosmetics. I think its their imagery and playfulness thats so appealing to me. With super cute neon packaging, unusual and unique textured lipsticks and glosses and extreme eyeshadows, dusts and lipsticks in colours beyond your imagination. Ive only owned one product by Lime Crime which i purchased from Space Nk about three years ago. Its quite difficult to purchase this brand on the highstreet, especially when you want to test them first. There are tons of reviews online and on youtube vlogs on the products. So do check them out.

My Lime Crime product was a lipstick. They only had a collection of lipsticks and eyeshadows. I love my red lipstick (as you will notice the more i blog about the stuff XD) What I adored most of all was the neon pink tube with a glitter unicorn silhouette sticker on it. To me they were so cute, and very what id call “Tokyo Kawaii” or “Harajuku’ isnpired.

I loved the product itself, i have to admit their lipsticks have a very unique plastic-like texture to them. And the red hue was extremely vivid too and really did pop against my pale complexion/vintage inspired make up. Unfortunately its plastic like texture didnt moisturise my lips so you have to have smooth lips before applying and maybe coat with a balm, It lasted a long time. I was gutted the lipstick itself didnt last long before it decided to snap. I think it was to do the ingredients and maybe had a best before date. Im not too sure the product had enough oils in it to last like traditional lipsticks do. This was a few years however and their product ingerdients may have improved since. This doesnt put me off, and i love to keep up on their product collections and im really yearnig to try their carousel Lipglosses, even the ones in green and gold shades. Also the new Velvetine gloss/lacquer looks beautiful. checkout the links below for reviews and their website:

The Pin Curl Set

Ive been doing my hair in Pin Curl sets for a few years now, and for any of you gals that haven’t and are getting into the vintage style, I would say the Pin Curl set is the ultimate authentic vintage curl, a must technique to perfect for vintage /pin up styling. Whats so wonderful about this technique, is once you have perfected it; it is the most sturdy curl you can get that no curling iron can create. Also, It creates a perfect foundation for up dos and authentic vintage techniques such as victory rolls, faux bangs and pompadour’s. Its very hard to look at these images below, and make sense straight away, but it gives you an idea, so i recommend this vlogger Lisa Freemont street or PinupDollAshleyMarie. They pretty much helped me perfect the pin curl set, as well as many their vintage hair and make up looks. Freemontstreets videos especially are great to watch coveing many vintage hair style and make up tutorials. Really inspirational and easy to follow.

I reccomend this book called Vintage hair styling: Retro styles and step by step techniques by Lauren Rennells. This book is the bible for vintage hair styling, and all us vintage lovers and rockabilly betties swear by this book. All the hairstyles and techniques are beautifully illustrated in easy to steps. She also shows you how to use different methods of curling, such as sponge rollers, hot irons, hot rollers, satin pillow rollers, back combing and victory rollin ;D

Rita Hyworth: Long hair Pin Curl Set

pincurls are a perfect technique for building and creating structured hairstyles as seen in above images: victory rolls, chignons, pompadours, faux bands, rat rolls.

my tips:

Setting lotion is key with the pin curl set. Id reccomend starting on dry hair. Spray the hair piece by piece as you roll with a mix of water and setting lotion. you can do a the set on just washed wet hair, but this can make your hair extra frizzy and will take longer to dry. If your planning on a pin curled hair style before an event or whatever. Prep the style early on the day before, and wear all day and all night to allow the set to dry thoroughly. Vintage Ladies wore scarfs over her pin curl set. Purchase sheer/chiffon square head scarfs. They look so pretty wrapped around your curls and tied in a cute bow on top. you can get them in tons of colours. combing out is key for the pin curl set, and it comes with tons of techniques do watch freemont streets vlogs, she shows you how to brush out your hair to make it sleek and smooth by brushing the hair length round yoour hand. The direction you set the curls will determine what waves you will achieve when dry and brushing it out. to create the s-wave effect you. each row of pin curls should be rolled opposite ways. It may seem complicated to start with, but do check out ‘The Vintage Hairstyling’ book and Lisa Freemont Streets videos.
